Agriculture in Transition: research priorities for the EU
13 Nov 2009
Unit: LEI

About 20 officials from the European Commission exchanged ideas with researchers from Wageningen UR on Agriculture in Transition during a buffet luncheon on 6 November, followed by a seminar with discussion. A variety of agriculture-related project areas were presented. Ruud Huirne presented ideas around agricultural production in the 21st century: how to feed 9 billion people in a more sustainable way. Bas Pedroli (Alterra) discussed challenges in rural development research and Hans van Meijl (LEI) did the same on agricultural policy. Hans Vrolijk stressed the need to take the micro-level into consideration as the farm structure is very heterogeneous. The commission staff was positive on the opportunity to check their own ideas on future issues with Wageningen UR and with their colleagues from other DGs. The general message was that Wageningen UR’s strategies in research are in line with the EC's ideas on future challenges.
