The biobased economy is replacing fossil raw materials with new products based on biomass. This offers new economic opportunities to sectors in which the Netherlands has traditionally had a strong position, such as the agrifood, chemicals, energy and logistics sectors.
Examples
The Netherlands' trade and logistics positions in Europe offer the Dutch chemical industry major opportunities in the bioplastics field. During the past years the Dutch agrifood sector has experienced a growing need for the improved use of its residual flows. Forecasts indicate a scaling-up of 'green gas' as a transport fuel within the near future.
Research
LEI assists the authorities, business community and NGOs by developing knowledge about business cases, policy, legislation and regulation and the impediments experienced by innovative companies. For example, in recent years we made an inventory of a number of residual flows and carried out a study to review the market for these materials.
