Renowned for its trade position, reputed for its high intensity of production, there is more to Dutch agriculture than tulips. With a share of roughly 10% in gross value added and employment, the Dutch agricultural sector is an important player in the Dutch economy.

This share is steadily declining, although the Netherlands is still among the world's three largest exporters of agricultural products - next to the United States and France. The ensuing high intensity of production, however, has affected the environment. Hence, there is a need to find a new balance between economic performance and environmental restraints, between a declining share of agriculture in local economies and the need to keep rural areas viable.

These type of questions are at the core of the LEI research programme on the Dutch agro-sector. The researchers of LEI try to shed light on all aspects of the sector, varying from structural developments to international trade, from farm profit and income to developments in the rural economy, from nature-management by farmers to environmental issues.
