Future European agriculture
The future of European agriculture and the rural world is very uncertain given rapidly increasing globalisation, energy shortages, climate change and unsustainable consumption of natural resources developments.

Questions arise such as:
  • Will biofuels replace oil as the main energy source and become the main crop for European agriculture? How will this affect food prices?
  • What will the farm of the future look like?
  • What is the impact of the CAP on agriculture and rural regions?
  • Will Europeans eat more fish and fish products?
  • How will climate change affect agricultural production in different parts of the EU?
Long term scenarios
LEI studies these issues in long term scenario studies such as SCENAR2020 and EUruralis. The main contribution of LEI in these projects is the economic modeling of developments in agricultural markets and the rural world. In the modelling framework the commodity focus and regional / territorial focus have to be connected. The global economy-wide dimension is covered by the economic LEITAP model. ESIM is providing more agricultural detail for the EU-25 countries and CAPRI is distributing this impact to the regional (NUTS2) level.

These models are used in different research projects. For more background information look at the project descriptions of:
