Expanses of fresh and salt water are of great importance for society. At LEI, we contribute to socio-economic innovations to stimulate sustainable water management.

Policy in this field proposes measures to assist in satisfying the European objectives of the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
The question is what the socio-economic consequences of these measures are. What are the social costs and benefits of social choices? How can blue services (water-related) be offered effectively and efficiently?

We carry out research into cost-effective measures and efficient solutions, which are also acceptable to entrepreneurs, policymakers and other involved parties. Participative methods are developed in order to involve relevant parties in policy development. In consultation with our clients, we seek out smart solutions, thus providing support to the Dutch national government, water boards and provincial governments. We also play an active role in international programmes.

Within the field of research, we focus on:

Water and economics
We carry out research into the economic aspects of water in green and blue space and support economic considerations in order to make better use of the water available in the production of food and energy.

Water and food
We indicate options for optimising the use of water in agricultural production and carry out research into the value of water for various crops (water productivity).

Water and energy
We focus on the consequences of higher energy prices for water management (extraction, transport, purification and desalinisation) and the demand for alternative energy sources (hydro-electric energy and biofuels).

Water and climate change
We indicate the costs and benefits of modifications in water management relating to changing circumstances arising from climate change.
